Everything you need to know before visiting the Duomo of Florence
The Duomo of Florence, or the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, is a Roman Catholic church consecrated in 1436. Along with its beautiful green, red, and white marble exterior and intricate marble floors, it is also famous for its Dome, also called Brunelleschi’s Dome, after its architect. It completely transformed the skyline of Florence, making it one of the most recognizable cities in the world! It rises high up above Florence and instantly lets visitors know that this is a city full of stunning architecture and beautiful (Renaissance) art.
About the Duomo of Florence
When it was built, the Duomo was the biggest church in the world. 30,000 people could fit inside! Its name, Santa Maria del Fiore (Lady of the Flower), may refer to the name of the city, which used to be Florentia, the city of flowers. It has a striking exterior, with green, white, and red marble adorned with flowers. There was a cathedral in its place before, called the Santa Reparata. The famous painter Giotto became the master builder in 1334. Later, a competition was held to select the person who would design the dome of the cathedral. Filippo Brunelleschi won with a unique idea of building a self-supporting structure that didn’t require scaffolding. Not only did Brunelleschi design the dome, but he also designed wooden machines that were used to transport material horizontally and vertically. The architect did not live to see the completion of the lantern, which is the smaller cupola on top of the Dome that lets light in.

Works of art in the Duomo of Florence
The interior of the Dome
The interior of the dome is one of the largest paintings ever created, measuring over 3,600 sqm! Giorgio Vasari and Federico Zuccari painted it in the 16th century.
A painting of Dante
Painted by Domenico di Michelino in the 15th century, “Dante Alighieri with Florence and the Realms of the Divine Comedy” depicts Dante with Florence in the background.
The “Assumption of the Virgin”
The “Assumption of the Virgin” is a stained glass window made by Lorenzo Ghiberti and Nicolò di Pietro Tedesco. The flowers refer to the name of the church–Santa Maria del Fiore or Saint Mary of the Flower.
The “Monumental clock”
Paolo Uccello’s fresco occupies a space of 45 square meters. The original look of the fresco was lost for a long time under layers of overpainting, and the 15th-century clock mechanism was replaced in the 18th century.
“Glass-eyed Madonna with St. Reparata and St. Zanobi”
It is a sculpture from the 14th century made by Arnolfo di Cambio and his workshop. The church was dedicated to St. Reparata in the 5th century, and St. Zanobi was a bishop of Florence. The statue was worshiped as miraculous.
Best time to visit the Duomo of Florence
The best time to visit the Duomo is as soon as it opens. Arrive earlier and wait for the cathedral to open. That way, you can avoid crowds that gather around midday. If you really want to avoid crowds, visit during the week, as weekends are usually busier.
Florence starts to see an increase in visitors around April, and July and August are the busiest months. October, November, and December are colder, and the chance of rain is higher, but better if you really want to avoid crowds. They are also good if you plan on visiting museums and staying indoors.
