Perfect for history geeks
OK, I'm a history geek. The Ghiberti pass was my first choice because I wanted to see the ancient foundations of the Duomo and the remains of the church of Santa Reparata. I also enjoyed the Opera del Duomo museum and its collection of original art. Standing in front of an actual Pietà sculpture made by Michelangelo - a surreal experience. The Baptistery of St. John, with its stunning mosaics, left me speechless. I recommend the Ghiberti pass to anyone who wants to explore more of Florence's history!
Back to the 4th century - impressive Florence experience
One can not imagine the historical richness of Florence without visiting the Duomo complex. Since we had already climbed both the bell tower and the cathedral a few years ago, we skipped that this time. Now, we wanted to see the oldest parts of the Duomo, and that's why we took the Ghiberti Pass. Can you imagine that the remains of Santa Reparata are still visible in the crypt? For me - impressive!

The story behind Ghiberti’s "Gates of Paradise"
The "Gates of Paradise", created by Lorenzo Ghiberti, are essential to Florence’s art history. In the early 1400s, the Baptistery needed new doors to show the city’s artistic talent. Ghiberti won the competition against other famous artists with his design, with ten panels showing biblical stories. It took him 27 years to finish the doors installed in 1452. The panels feature vital scenes like the Creation of Adam and Eve and the Sacrifice of Isaac, demonstrating Ghiberti’s skill in detail and perspective. Made of gilded bronze, the doors are about 17 feet tall. Ghiberti’s innovative work greatly impacted Renaissance art and was praised by many, including Michelangelo, who famously nicknamed them the “Gates of Paradise”.
