Did you know Brunelleschi had to collaborate with his rival on the Florence Duomo?
In 1420, Filippo Brunelleschi was named the superintendent for the Florence Duomo project, but the administrators still had some doubts about him because he had no architectural training. So, they appointed his rival, Lorenzo Ghiberti, as co-superintendent to oversee the project. Ghiberti, a well-respected goldsmith, had previously defeated Brunelleschi for the commission of the bronze doors for the Baptistery in 1401, which damaged their relationship. The administrators believed that involving Ghiberti would keep Brunelleschi in check. It was the complete opposite: their mutual distrust only fueled the competition and secrecy. In 1434, Ghiberti reportedly tried to imprison Brunelleschi over a technicality related to unpaid union dues. However, Brunelleschi was released quickly and was ultimately the victor as he watched how his vision for the Duomo came to life.
